How Important is Self-Love?

As I, Dr Neeti Kaushik reflect on my upbringing, I realize that my mother’s unwavering dedication to our family left an indelible mark on me. Her selflessness was admirable, but it came at the cost of neglecting her own needs and desires. She tirelessly attended to the needs of her children, husband, and in-laws, never once pausing to consider her own well-being. Witnessing her sacrifice, I internalized the belief that prioritizing oneself was selfish and that true fulfillment came from serving others.

The Frustration of Self-Neglect

As I navigated through adulthood, I found myself following in my mother’s footsteps, always putting others’ needs ahead of my own. While I derived momentary joy from fulfilling my duties and responsibilities, I couldn’t shake off the underlying sense of emptiness and frustration. It wasn’t until I hit a breaking point that I began to question the validity of my beliefs. Why did self-care feel like an indulgence rather than a necessity? Why did I feel guilty for prioritizing my own happiness?

The Revelation: Self-Love as a Necessity

The true revelation came when I witnessed my mother’s struggle to adapt after my father’s passing. For years, she had leaned on him for every aspect of her life, relying on his strength and presence to navigate the world. But when he was suddenly taken from us, she was thrust into a reality where she had to fend for herself—a daunting prospect for someone who had grown accustomed to dependency.

In the midst of her grief and uncertainty, something remarkable happened. My mother, once confined by the walls of her own limitations, stepped outside into the vast expanse of possibility. No longer bound by the expectations of others, she ventured into the world with a newfound sense of purpose and determination.

Gone were the days of self-imposed limitations and self-neglect. Instead, she adorned herself with the simple pleasures that brought her joy—buying her favourite clothes, indulging in luxurious footwear, and savouring the Flavors of her favourite dishes. With each act of self-care, I witnessed a transformation unfold before my eyes—a radiant glow of fulfilment emanating from within.

However, I couldn’t help but think she should have realized this sooner, not when life pushed her into it.

The Journey Begins: Embracing Self-Love

Seeing myself in my mother, I decided I would not wait until it was too late to realize my self-worth. I began exploring the concept of self-love more deeply. I listed the things I had been denying myself, recognizing that I wore different masks in different roles—at work, as a wife, as a mother—and in the process, I lost the real me. I confronted my body image issues and started letting go of limiting beliefs. Through practicing gratitude and self-acceptance, I learned that self-love is about valuing yourself in your own eyes.

Self-Love: A Foundation for Happiness

Self-love is not about being selfish. It’s like a well: an empty well cannot satisfy others’ thirst; it needs to be full of water. Similarly, our lives must be full of self-love before we can genuinely love others. Over time, I have come to understand and embrace self-love. Now, I want to share this journey with as many people as possible, especially women who have lost themselves in fulfilling their duties.
