Everything You Need to Know About This Rare and Powerful Month
There are moments in life when the universe quietly whispers – slow down. Stop rushing. Come inward. Adhik Maas (Malmas) is one of those divine whispers. And in 2026, this extraordinary month is arriving from 17 May to 15 June – and I genuinely feel that if you understand what it is and how to honour it, it could become one of the most transformative periods of your entire year.
I remember the first time I truly understood Adhik Maas. I had big plans – launching a new project, finalising some important decisions – and a wise elder in my family gently stopped me. She said, ‘Bitiya, wait. This is Adhik Maas. The gods are resting. You rest too.’ I was puzzled. I did not fully understand. But I listened. And that one month of deliberate stillness changed something inside me forever.
Today, I want to share everything I know about Adhik Maas – what it is, why it happens, the beautiful mythology behind it, and most importantly, how you can use this time wisely and meaningfully. I promise you – there is nothing to fear here. This is not about restrictions. This is about invitation.
So, What Exactly Is Adhik Maas?
Adhik Maas – also called Purushottam Maa or Malmas – is an extra month that appears in the Hindu lunar calendar roughly once every 32 to 33 months. The word ‘Adhik’ means extra or additional, and ‘Maas’ means month. So it is literally the ‘extra month’ in the Hindu calendar.
Now, you might wonder – why would the calendar even need an extra month? Here is the beautiful science and logic behind it.
The Science Behind the Extra Month
The Hindu calendar follows the lunar cycle, where each month is about 29.5 days long. That makes a lunar year approximately 354 days – roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year of 365 days. Over about 32 months, this gap adds up to almost a full month.
To bridge this gap and keep the lunar calendar aligned with the seasons, our ancient astronomers added an extra month. This corrective month is called Adhik Maas – and it is precisely this month that becomes Adhik Maas. The lunar month in which no Surya Sankranti occurs – meaning the Sun does not transition into a new zodiac sign during that entire month – is declared the extra month.
| Quick Fact |
| Adhik Maas appears approximately every 32 months and 16 days. It takes the name of the lunar month it falls in, with the prefix ‘Adhika’ added. In 2026, it falls in the month of Jyeshtha – so it is called Adhika Jyeshtha Maas, and Jyeshtha occurs twice this year. |
The Story Behind Adhik Maas – A Tale of Devotion and Grace
Every aspect of our tradition carries a story that holds deep meaning. And Adhik Maas is no different.
According to our scriptures, when this extra month was born, it found itself in a painful predicament. Every month of the Hindu calendar had a ruling deity – a divine guardian. But this extra month had none. No one claimed it. No festival belonged to it. & No auspicious ceremony was scheduled within it. It felt unwanted, incomplete, without identity or purpose.
The month, feeling deeply saddened, approached Lord Vishnu with a heavy heart and said: ‘Lord, I have no god of my own. I am considered inauspicious. Nobody wants to begin anything during my time. What will become of me?’
And Lord Vishnu, in his infinite compassion, did something extraordinary. He said – ‘You will no longer be called Adhik Maas. From now, you shall be called Purushottam Maas – named after me, Purushottam, the Supreme Being. I take you as my own. And those who worship me sincerely during this month, who read the scriptures, do charity, fast, and pray – they shall receive blessings that are unmatched throughout the year.’
Just sit with that for a moment. The month that was considered the most inauspicious became the most sacred – simply because God chose it. That, to me, is one of the most beautiful teachings of our entire tradition. It reminds us that no situation is beyond grace.
| Remember This |
| Adhik Maas is not a period of bad luck. It is a month personally claimed by Lord Vishnu himself – Purushottam Maas. What could be more auspicious than a month that belongs to God? |

Adhik Maas 2026 – The Exact Dates and What Makes It Special
Now let us talk about the Adhik Maas that is arriving in 2026 – because this one carries something particularly special, and I want you to have all the correct facts.
| Detail | Information |
| Start Date | Sunday, 17 May 2026 |
| End Date | Monday, 15 June 2026 |
| Duration | 30 days |
| Hindu Calendar Name | Adhika Jyeshtha Maas |
| Why Extra Jyeshtha? | Jyeshtha month appears twice in 2026 – making it a 13-month Hindu year |
| Purushottam Purnima | Sunday, 31 May 2026 – the single most powerful day of the entire month |
| What Makes 2026 Special | Double Jyeshtha – a rarer occurrence even within Adhik Maas cycles |
Why Is Adhik Maas 2026 Different From Others?
This is the question I have been hearing the most, and it truly deserves a thoughtful answer.
In 2026, the Hindu Panchang observes something rarer than just a regular Adhik Maas – the month of Jyeshtha appears twice. This means 2026 is a 13-month Hindu lunar year, which itself is uncommon. A double Jyeshtha is a rarer occurrence even within Adhik Maas cycles.
And then there is Purushottam Purnima – the full moon day falling on 31 May 2026. This is considered the single most powerful day within the entire Adhika Maas. The energy of Vishnu Tattva is believed to be at its absolute peak on this day. If there is one day in Adhik Maas to dedicate completely to prayer, mantra, and inner healing – it is this one.
- The double Jyeshtha makes this Adhik Maas energetically amplified – even the extra month itself is rare this time.
- Purushottam Purnima on 31 May 2026 is ideal for mantra sadhana, charity, and ancestor prayers.
- The entire 30-day window from 17 May to 15 June is under the direct shelter of Lord Vishnu.
- Any act of worship, giving, or healing during this period is said to carry multiplied spiritual merit.
The Spiritual Significance of Adhik Maas – Why This Month Matters
I want you to really understand this – because once you do, your approach to this month will shift completely.
In our daily lives, we are constantly in a state of doing. Planning, launching, building, running. And that is beautiful – that is how we grow. But growth also requires rest. A plant cannot bloom continuously without seasons of stillness. The soil needs rest to become fertile again.
Adhik Maas is that season of stillness for our souls.
What Adhik Maas Teaches Us
- That not every moment needs to be productive in the conventional sense.
- That going inward is not a step backward – it is a powerful step forward.
- That devotion, prayer, and silence create a foundation that all outer success rests upon.
- That giving – of your time, resources, and kindness – cleanses the energy we carry.
Our scriptures say that the spiritual merit gained during Purushottam Maas through fasting, charity, and worship equals what one would accumulate over years of regular practice. Whether you interpret that literally or symbolically, the message is clear: this is a potent time. Do not let it slip away in distraction.
What Should You Do During Adhik Maas?
Let me be very clear here. Adhik Maas is not about fear. It is not about sitting at home and doing nothing. It is about consciously choosing where you put your energy during this month. Here is what I personally recommend and what our scriptures guide us toward.
Daily Practices
- Light a lamp every morning and evening – a simple diya keeps the energy of your home clean and sacred.
- Chant the Vishnu Sahasranama, or at the very least 108 repetitions of Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.
- Read the Bhagavat Purana or Purushottam Mahatmya if you can. Even a few pages a day counts.
- Meditate – even ten quiet minutes each morning can create a profound shift over 30 days.
- Light a ghee lamp beside the Tulsi plant each evening and offer a simple prayer – a practice closely associated with this month across many traditions.
Acts of Giving
- Donate food, especially to those in need. Annadaan is considered deeply meritorious during Adhik Maas.
- Give clothes, books, or any essentials to someone who needs them.
- Offer flowers, tulsi, and water to a Vishnu idol or image at home.
For Your Inner World
- Use this time for journaling, shadow work, or healing old wounds that have been waiting for your attention.
- If you have been carrying grudges or emotional weight, this is an ideal time to forgive and release.
- Start a gratitude practice – write three things you are grateful for each night before you sleep.

Adhik Maas is a time of grace, not punishment. Consult your family pandit or astrologer for specific guidance. Our scriptures have always honoured intent and devotion above rigid rule-following. |
Adhik Maas and Manifestation – Can You Still Work Toward Your Goals?
I know many of you are on a manifestation journey, and this question comes up every time Adhik Maas arrives: Can I still manifest? Can I still visualise, affirm, and work toward my dreams?
Yes. Absolutely yes.
Adhik Maas does not stop you from dreaming, affirming, or doing your inner work. In fact, I believe it amplifies it. What the tradition cautions against are external big launches and contractual beginnings in the material world – because the energy is more suited to depth than breadth during this time.
Think of Adhik Maas as the phase where you plant seeds deep in the soil. You may not see the sprout immediately. But when the auspicious season arrives after Adhik Maas ends on 15 June, those seeds will shoot up with extraordinary force. This is actually a golden time to do deep healing work, clear your limiting beliefs, and build the energetic foundation for everything you want to create next.
My Ho’oponopono healing practices, 7 Chakra meditation and inner child healing work beautifully during this time. Forgiveness, emotional clearing, and deep alignment – these are Adhik Maas specialties. If you have been wanting to go deeper into your healing journey, this month is calling you in.
A Personal Note – What Adhik Maas Has Gifted Me
Every time Adhik Maas has come into my life, it has brought something unexpected and deeply beautiful with it. Not because I was passive – but because I was more present. More honest with myself. More willing to sit with questions instead of rushing toward answers.
One Adhik Maas, I committed to 30 days of consecutive journaling. By the end, I had clarity about my life purpose that no amount of planning had ever given me. Another Adhik Maas, I recited Vishnu Sahasranama daily. By the time the month ended, I felt lighter – emotionally, energetically – than I had in years.
I am not sharing this to sound preachy. I am sharing this because I want you to experience it too. Not rituals for the sake of rituals – but the peace that comes when you deliberately slow down and surrender to something larger than yourself.
Adhik Maas is that opportunity, arriving at your door, dressed in the gentle robes of stillness. From 17 May. For 30 days. For you.
