The Four-Word Prayer That Changed My Life

Everything You Need to Know About the Magical Ho’oponopono Prayer

I still remember that evening. I was sitting on my bedroom floor, crying – not loudly, but the quiet kind of crying that is the worst. & I had just had a painful argument with someone I deeply loved. My heart felt heavy. My mind kept replaying every word, every hurt, every moment that had gone wrong.

And then I said four words.

Just four simple words.

“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”

I said them softly, to myself, to the universe, to the person who had hurt me – and to the version of me that had been holding so much pain.

Within minutes, something shifted. A strange peace washed over me. My shoulders dropped. My breathing slowed. It felt like someone had quietly removed a heavy stone from my chest.

That was my first real experience with Ho’oponopono – and it absolutely changed everything for me.

What Exactly Is Ho’oponopono?

Ho’oponopono (pronounced ho-o-pono-pono) is an ancient Hawaiian healing prayer and practice. The word itself means ‘to make right’ or ‘to correct an error’. It is a practice of forgiveness, reconciliation, and inner cleansing.

For centuries, native Hawaiian communities used this practice to heal broken relationships, resolve conflicts within families, and restore harmony in their communities. It was led by a spiritual healer called a Kahuna and involved the whole family or group sitting together, speaking honestly, forgiving each other, and releasing the past.

But the version most of us know today – the simple four-phrase prayer – became famous through the work of a Hawaiian therapist named Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len. And what he did with it is, honestly, one of the most extraordinary stories I have ever heard.

The Extraordinary Story of Dr. Hew Len

Dr. Hew Len worked at a ward for the criminally insane in Hawaii in the 1980s. The ward was known to be one of the most dangerous in the state. Staff would quit regularly out of fear. Patients were violent and heavily medicated.

But Dr. Hew Len never saw a single patient directly in the traditional way. Instead, he would sit in his office, read each patient’s file, and then work on himself – repeating Ho’oponopono.

Within a few years, patients who had been shackled were allowed to walk freely. Medications were reduced. Staff stopped quitting. The ward was eventually closed because there were no more patients to treat.

His belief? That everything we experience in our outer world is a reflection of what is inside us. And to heal anything, we must start by healing ourselves.

The Four Magical Phrases – And What They Really Mean

Let me break this down simply for you because I think most people misunderstand this practice when they first hear about it.

These four phrases are not just words. They are vibrations. They are intentions. & They are a complete healing system packed into four beautiful sentences.

The PhraseWhat It MeansWhy It Is Powerful
I’m SorryI acknowledge the pain I carry inside meIt opens the door to self-awareness without blame
Please Forgive MeI ask for release from this old energyIt dissolves guilt and shame from the inside out
Thank YouI am grateful for this healing opportunityGratitude shifts your vibration instantly
I Love YouI send love to myself, to you, to the universeLove is the highest frequency that heals everything

The beauty is that you do not even need to say these words to the person directly. You say them inwardly – to the situation, to yourself, to the energy of whatever is causing you pain. Because Ho’oponopono teaches us something radical:

Everything you experience in your life exists first as a memory or a program inside you. To change your reality, you clean those inner programs.

How Does Ho’oponopono Actually Work?

Here is the core philosophy behind this practice, and I want you to really sit with this because it changed the way I see everything.

In Ho’oponopono, the belief is that our mind – especially what is called the subconscious mind – holds memories of every experience we have ever had. Not just from this lifetime, but some teachers believe from past lives too. These stored memories play like old recordings, and they create the circumstances of our life again and again.

When something painful, difficult, or unwanted shows up in your life – a conflict, a health issue, a financial struggle, a broken relationship – Ho’oponopono says: there is a memory inside you that is calling this forward. And you have the power to clean it.

The four phrases act as that cleaning tool. When you say them with sincerity:

  • You acknowledge responsibility for your inner world (I’m sorry)
  • You ask for the memory or pattern to be released (Please forgive me)
  • You express gratitude for the chance to heal (Thank you)
  • You send the highest frequency – love – to complete the healing (I love you)

The Divine, the universe, whatever higher power you believe in – steps in and transmutes that energy. The old memory is cleaned. And your outer world begins to shift.

I know this might sound too simple. I thought so too. But then I tried it – repeatedly, deeply, with full sincerity – and the results I experienced were nothing short of miraculous.

Who Can Use This Practice? (Hint: Everyone)

One of the things I love most about Ho’oponopono is that it asks nothing complicated of you. You do not need to be religious. You do not need to believe in any specific tradition. & You do not need to sit in a particular posture or light any candles.

And You just need to be willing to take responsibility for your inner world and offer it love.

You can use this practice for –

  • Healing a painful relationship – with a parent, partner, child, friend, or even an ex
  • Releasing guilt and shame – the kind you have carried for years without telling anyone
  • Healing your body – chronic pain, illness, and stress all hold emotional memories
  • Clearing financial blocks – old stories and fears around money that stop abundance flowing
  • Manifesting your dreams – by cleaning the inner blocks that resist what you desire
  • Finding peace – when anxiety, overthinking, or fear will not let you rest

How to Practice Ho’oponopono – Step by Step

Let me walk you through how I personally use this practice. You can adapt it however feels right for you.

Step 1 – Choose what to work on

Think of a person, a situation, a feeling, or a pattern that is causing you pain or is stuck in your life. Hold it gently in your awareness.

Step 2 – Place your hand on your heart

This simple gesture connects you to the feeling body and signals to your subconscious that what follows is sincere.

Step 3 – Repeat the four phrases

Say them slowly, one by one. You can say them out loud or silently. You can address them to the person, the situation, or simply to yourself:

“I am sorry.”
“Please forgive me.”
“Thank you.”
“I love you.”

Step 4 – Repeat as many times as needed

Some people do this for 5 minutes. Some do it for an hour. & Some repeat just these four lines throughout the day – while cooking, walking, even before sleep. There is no rule. Let your heart guide you.

Step 5 – Trust and release

This is the most important step. Once you have said the words with sincerity, you release the outcome. You do not control what happens next. You simply trust that the cleaning has begun.

What Happens When You Practice Regularly?

I want to be honest with you. The first time you try this, you might not feel anything dramatic. That is okay. The cleaning is still happening even when you cannot see or feel it immediately.

But over time – and sometimes surprisingly quickly – people begin to notice changes:

  • A relationship that felt frozen starts to thaw. A conversation happens that you thought was impossible.
  • A situation that was blocked suddenly finds a way to move forward.
  • Old guilt or anger that you had been carrying for years quietly dissolves.
  • You feel lighter. Calmer. More peaceful – without being able to explain exactly why.
  • Your manifestations start to flow more easily because the inner resistance is gone.

One of my students once told me: ‘Dr. Neeti, I have been trying to manifest my dream job for two years. Nothing was working. I started doing Ho’oponopono every day – mostly for old childhood wounds I had with my father and my self-worth. Within three weeks, a job offer came through completely out of nowhere. I believe those were connected.’

I believe so too.

Because when we clean the inside, the outside shifts. Always.

The Questions I Get Asked Most Often

Do I need to believe in this for it to work?

Not fully. Just be open. Willingness is enough to begin. Many of my students were skeptical at first – and yet they experienced real changes. The practice works on your subconscious, not just your logical mind.

What if the person I need to forgive has passed away?

Ho’oponopono works beautifully for this. Energy transcends time and physical presence. You are not just sending words to a person – you are cleaning the energy of the relationship inside yourself. It heals even across lifetimes.

What if I do not feel sincere when I say the words?

Say them anyway. Keep saying them. The sincerity grows. There were days I said them through tears and did not fully believe them – but I kept going. And something always shifted. Trust the practice even when you cannot trust your feelings in that moment.

Can I do this for someone else – without them knowing?

Yes! This is one of the most beautiful aspects of Ho’oponopono. You can do this for a sick family member, a child going through difficulty, a friend in pain, or even a world situation that troubles you. You are taking responsibility for what exists in your inner world and cleaning it. And that ripples outward.

Going Deeper – Because This Is Just the Beginning

The four phrases are a beautiful entry point. But Ho’oponopono as a complete system goes much deeper.

In my advanced work with this practice, I explore:

  • How to use Ho’oponopono specifically for manifestation and abundance blocks
  • Identifying the root memory behind recurring life patterns
  • Using the practice during deep meditation for cellular-level healing
  • Combining Ho’oponopono with breathwork for emotional release
  • Specific Ho’oponopono prayers for self-love, relationships, health, and money

If you feel called to go this deep, I have created something truly special for you.

You deserve to be healed. You deserve to be free. And you are so much more powerful than you know.
